Kanon

It took forever before somebody was able to convince me to watch this series. A friend was comparing it to KimiNozo and thought if I liked that anime I might also like this one. Um, I should’ve told him that KimiNozo wasn’t exactly on my top ten list. (Not that I disliked KimiNozo, it’s okay for a drama but you’ve got to pay me a lot of money before I have a second viewing. KimiNozo is overrated, anyway.) Thank goodness, I enjoyed Kanon better than the other title. This anime had the warmth that KimiNozo lacks. Although my initial reaction was, “Whoa, scary”, I got emotionally involved by the end of the thirteenth episode. If you completed all episodes and was not even touched one bit, you probably are made out of stone.
There are five girls each with different stories interconnected to one another because of one boy.
*Shiori. She is supposedly inflicted with an incurable illness but the disease wasn’t further explained. I guess we are supposed to accept her situation without question. Frankly, I find her story the blandest of the five. I wanted to bash the brains out her sister who has this insane logic.
*Mai. I find her illustrations the most appealing of the all the girls. I think I am partial to her because she wields a sword and fights imaginary monsters. It reminds me of this blonde slayer (Buffy addictions never cease). Her classmates misunderstood her behavior thinking she’s a troublemaker. In reality, she’s a shy girl who rarely articulates her emotions.
*Makoto. Cute girl, weird background. Just when I thought Mai’s schizophrenic mind is not quite normal, her history is way out there. She might not be my favorite but I was holding back tears when I learned about her fate.
*Nayuki. I don’t know the reason why she rubs me the wrong way except when she’s sleepy. I dislike her, period.
*Ayu. Adorable Ayu-chan. Isn’t she the cutest little thing? I was bawling like a baby when I watched her story. I had a feeling where it was going but I was still crying my eyes out viewing her scenes. Argh, I’m suppose to be tougher than that. I want a live action version around her story, preferably starring the female lead of My Sassy Girl. They can do it Korean style.
*Yuuichi. Um, he’s your typical lead male who is kind and loved by all the lead females of the cast. Nothing special but all I can say is that he’s backbone is a hundred time stronger than a certain Takayuki of KimiNozo who shall remain nameless. Ahem.
The opening and the ending songs were easy listening pieces. Even most of the background music were pretty good too. The opening sequences were actually impressive, especially the sweeping-like effect of the first few frames. A second viewing for this anime isn’t a bad idea at all. The second half is much stronger than the first one. Yet if it weren’t for the long introduction of the first half, the second half wouldn’t be that effective, right?
