Yu Yu Hakusho

It is useless to dissuade me from staying away from this sentimental favorite of mine. Although technically it was the Inuyasha series that introduced me to the world of fansubbing, Yu Yu Hakusho gave birth to an incurable addiction. It was the one series that planted the seeds that soon became a fully grown monster. Okay, I am exaggerating but YYH is one of my all-time favorites.
I definitely knew about YYH way before I heard the name Inuyasha. Although I wasn’t fully into anime watching at that time, but I sure did followed every episode of the Filipino dubbed version which aired locally in Manila. Talk about addicting.
The Dark tournament arc is definitely one of the most compelling arcs produced in its genre. Just the heart pounding battles is enough to convince me to buy even the HK subbed DVDs. Sure it got to the point where they acquired way too much power but even for a hundred and twelve episode series, it never came to a boring and pointless plot. Every arc has its own strong points and charm.
There are four main characters in YYH: Yusuke, Kuwabara, Hiei, and Kurama.
*Yusuke Urameshi owns the series. Technically, it’s about his journey to become one of the most powerful creature alive. He’s rude, violent, and misguided, until a mission drops arrives by his doorstep. In fact, he is very kind and loyal to his friend although he tend to hide this traits. He is completely in-love with Keiko eventhough he denies saying so. He is one of the characters in all anime that I will probably not forget.
*Kuwabara. He is Yusuke’s classmate and a rival of sorts. However, when he learned about the ‘death’ of Yusuke, he finally revealed his true feelings. No, not that romantic feelings you crazy fangirl. It’s friendship. He is totally obsessed with Yukina, Hiei’s sister. Of course, he is totally clueless about her background. When it come to fighting, he wields a sword by using his accumulated energy.
*Hiei. This three-eyed demon was once cast out of a snowy village when he possessed the ability of fire. Though he appears to be calm on the surface, I can imagine plenty of emotions running through his heart. Eventhough he was abandoned at birth and held a grudge towards the villagers, he still came to protect his sister, Yukina, in secret. Eventually he mellowed quite a bit and seemed to be satisfied staying in the demon world with Mukoru.
*Kurama is probably the most popular character in YYH. Most of the YYH sites are dedicated to this calm and seemingly gentle reincarnated fox demon. He certainly looks feminine but his actions are far from the Yaoi fanfic realm suggest. He seem to be the kindest of the group but I am fairly certain that he is by far the coldest of them all. He mellowed out during his stay in the human world but he retained his distance even with those closest to him.
To those who wonder who I admire most, of course no other than Yusuke. Not because he is the lead but I tend to be attracted to that kind of personality. Yes, definitely the bad boy type. But when it comes to the villains, I sure love the cool, calm, and collected ex-spirit detective Sensui. He may be on the schizophrenic side but boy-oh-boy. Love him, hate him, I don’t care. He is mine. Ooops. Too much fan-girly reaction going one here.
