Let’s Volt in….

If you grew up in Manila, you might have heard of this catchy phrase. It came from a classic 70’s mecha anime show called Voltes V. Well, the Filipino-English dubbed version anyway. To think I gave up looking for it a few months ago, recently I was gladly surprised to find a batch torrent file for the entire series in Boxtorrents while looking for new shows to sample.

When I was a kid, I remember talks about how it was banned by the Marcos regime when it first aired in the Philippines. When the dictatorship ended, they re-aired the series in the 80s. However, I don’t remember finishing the entire show. Few years passed. Voltes V was almost forgotten. In the late 90s, its OP suddenly became so popular. The unlikely source? The theme was used in a very popular sketch from a local comedy show (ala SNL without the band and the live audience). The OP was insanely popular that one of the local networks re-dubbed Voltes V in Tagalog and aired the series twice a week in prime time. Since it was a childhood favorite, I joined the craziness and followed the episodes at first. Unfortunately, my schedule became erratic between school and extra-curricular activities that I missed second half of the series. Though I was told of the finale, I could not help but want to watch the series itself.

If I can only find Voltron and Daimos, I’ll be set reliving my childhood. Coincidentally, I found the series around the same time I’ve just started communicating with my old elementary classmates. Now, I’m getting freakishly nostalgic.
