One Piece: Episode 92

How can anyone not love Bon Clay? He wears horrendously applied make-up, an outrageous outfit with matching swans on his back, and a pair of ballerina slippers. He proudly displays okama way at his back. He’s loud, boisterous, and a darn good showman. No wonder Luffy, Ussop, and Chopper were charmed by his flamboyant behavior. The downside? He is Baroque Works’ Mr. 2. The only number without a partner.

Although Mr. 2 is now capable of impersonating almost everybody on board Going Merry, the encounter with the enemy was a blessing in disguise. The Straw Hat crew are now aware of his Devil’s fruit powers and are able to prepare preventive measures against being fooled by him.

Back at Alabasta, Crocodile continues his act as the hero of the people. To gain the trust of the masses, he saves small towns from being pillaged by pirates. Instead of being envious of Crocodile’s rising popularity, the good king of Alabasta — still uninformed of Crocodile’s plans — appreciates the help the townspeople have received from this two-faced monster.

Crocodile’s plan to gain the respect and adoration of the people before backstabbing them is not exactly original but still effective. If you think about how politics is being played in the real world, this powerplay can be seen in the contemporary times. Having lived in a third world country where a gambling lord ascended to presidency, I’ve seen politicians assume the role of a hero when in fact they are responsible for the miserable lives of most of their constituents. Don’t worry I won’t go into political issues. I’m not capable of articulating an educated argument. Also, this is not the space for such matters. I’m just saying that this Crocodile fellow could be one of those prominent politicians we admire/dislike. Just a thought.

On a lighter note, I am looking forward in seeing Ace. The Luffy crew will definitely be shocked at his connection to Luffy.
