Troy
As a kid, I spent hours devouring information about Greek mythology. The exploits of gods and goddess holds a certain appeal to my then young mind. Although I haven’t kept up with this interest after high school, I am still quite partial to anything related to the subject.
Reading the news about the movie Troy, I was surprised about the fact that the director opted to omit the gods and goddess. Even director Wolfgang Peterson was quoted saying, ” Homer was a genius getting the story right for his audience, 500 or 600 years after the fact, so I’m confident that he’d look down at is today, and smile and say, ‘Take the gods out.’ “
I agree that when it comes to filming, directors should have the right to take artistic liberties in the adapted screenplay. However, to go so far and rewrite essential subplots from classic literature is downright arrogant. Part of the allure diminishes.
Admittedly, I haven’t seen the movie yet. So I’ll try and watch it first to see how the movie holds up to par with the original before I complain incessantly.
