Otogizoushi: Episode 02

Although the animation was not as stunning as the previous one (the production team probably blew all the budget for the pilot), the plot begins to move forward. The warriors from the capital gained a (temporary?) ally in their journey as the storyline slowly advances.
To recap what we have so far. The so-called Raikou-sama protected by Tsuna is in fact a woman named Hikaru disguised as her brother. Because of her brother’s illness, she took his place in finding the legendary magatama stolen by the Tsuchigumo (the monkey-like warriors who were attacking the pair in the previous episode). They arrived in a seemingly quiet village controlled by the Tsuchigumo. In the outskirts they learned of the truth behind the peaceful facade from a vanguard-turned-bum Sadamitsu. Although Sadamitsu adamantly refused to take part on any rescue mission, in the end he teamed up with the pair and set themselves out for a fun-filled adventure. Or maybe not.
We see a clearer picture of Hikaru’s goal in this task even if it costs her life. She is aware of her capabilities and limitations but refuses to admit defeat until she gives her all. And she and her guardian are growing on me. They even had a funny moment with the scene with women and sake. Sadamitsu seems carefree but his warrior spirit is gradually reawakening. The beautiful performer has not yet given any indication on how he will take part in this interwoven subplots. He may cross paths with the pair (or now the trio) sooner than expected since Hikaru already caught a glimpse of him. We’ll probably see more of the political machinations in the capital where the power-hungry prey on weaker minds.
The episode was a very solid follow-up to the impressive pilot. The animation quality slightly dropped but it still up to par. I am anxiously awaiting for the next episode. This series may be on the serious side but more people should give it a try.
