Samurai Champloo: Episode 09

Despite my uncertainties toward Samurai Champloo, I find myself highly amused at the recent episodes. While it’s not on my must-see list, its strange atmosphere draws me in.
As usual, the direction which the main thread leads remains stagnant. If anyone is looking for signs of story advancement, you’re looking at the wrong place unless we count Mugen’s positive side highlighted in the episode. He had the opportunity to escape for he had no real obligation to Fuu and Jin. The foundation of their ties is fragile at best.
What’s up with the redundancy of the characters being taken hostage? Is there some kind of metaphor or symbolism behind this? Probably not.
