Samurai Champloo: Episode 11

Two excellent episodes in a row? I’m astounded. A deceivingly simple love story between two individuals finally gave Samurai Champloo what it needs, warmth.

Jin’s kindness to a total stranger blossomed into a deeper emotion. He even prepared to abandon his promise and risk his life for this person. Bidding his farewell to Fuu almost mimics the scene from the previous episode where Mugen says his supposed final words.

I’d like to think that he fully intends to keep his word to Fuu. However, his dangerous plan to rescue and protect his lover could’ve meant death for him. Watching Jin looking over the waters as Shino drifts away was both beautiful and painful.

Recently, we were shown Mugen’s injured hands. Now, this episode featured a storyline with Jin’s wounded heart. If there’s a pattern, sophus should follow, right? Errr…Fuu? Maybe it’s spiritus not sophus. A broken spirit and Fuu…I wouldn’t mind seeing how that would fit to the sunflower-samurai arc.

I’m retracting my statements saying that this series is all about style. If a few more solid episodes follow-up this beautiful episode, it would redeem its weak side stories.
