Samurai Champloo: Episode 14

While I have not completely forgiven Samurai Champloo for its barely-mediocre episodes, the recent influx of impressive chapters are more than enough to bring back my early optimism for the title. I have to agree with David that the series is developing into one of the best series of the year. Not only does it delivers excellent animation, the continuing character advancement now plays a huge role.

In light of the recent events, Mugen and Jin’s relationship evolve into a more substantial partnership other than embittered rivals. Though Mugen insists on denying a certain loyalty for Jin and Fuu, he could not escape the fact that a bond has already been established. Jin’s instinctive response to the supposed demise of Mugen was claiming the life of Mukuro. His strong sense of relief upon learning of Mugen’s survival surprisingly showed on his otherwise stoic face.

The betrayal must’ve marked deep within Mugen. The second chance he gave to Mukuro may be a subconscious effort in his part to convince himself he was not abandoned years ago. But the most harrowing part of the incident lies on Kozan’s apparent machinations. She’s a childhood friend and probably one of the few whom he has a sort-of attachment to. He could not murder the spineless girl for she was also Mukuro’s victim of sorts. And quite frankly, leaving her alone without anyone to cling to might be the worst punishment to dish on her.

Can I just say how much I’m loving the way the episode ended.
