Bleach: Episode 04

After a relatively rough start, the anime seems to be pulling itself together, first with Orihime’s back story, and now, with the introduction of Chad. The latest installment manages to flesh out the character Chad as a complex individual rather than just relegating him as the stereotypical ‘muscle-guy’. Although laden with an innate freakish power, he seems to view this strength as his only worth. He seems to be oblivious of his kind and compassionate nature.

Another important development in the series comes from Ichigo’s little sister, Karin. Not only does the episode emphasize her strong ability to sense the paranormal, it also suggests that Ichigo’s family are not merely created for the sole purpose of comedic relief.

Even with the monster-of-the-week routine, the title advanced the storyline with ease. The parakeet may be a plot device but according to it’s backstory it is rife with good storytelling. Hmmm…can’t you smell the angst coming our way?
