List Mania! part 1
Beck. If the director plays his cards right, a great series is on his way. In order to achieve a successful adaptation, he needs to overcome the anime’s biggest hurdle. The series needs a talented lyricist, composer, vocalist, and musicians who understand the spirit of Beck. Beck makes me feel nostalgic for senior year in HS. Ah…to be fifteen again.
Gankutsuou. By virtue of animation alone, Gonzo’s Gankutsuou should be given at least one chance by any anime enthusiast. The potentially pathos-filled adaptation shown from Franz’ perspective may be a creative take on Dumas’ novel. Yet a revenge-driven drama simply does not interest me. I like the novel but not enough to generate excitement for the title. Unless Gonzo manages to bring poignant and fresh twists (other than mecha) on the series, I may remain as a casual observer.
Harukanaru Toki no naka de. Unfortunately, the direction of the show lacks originality and appeal (to me, at least). The Fushigi Yuugi-ness of the plot is enough to send this audience member to a hair-pulling frenzy. Eye-candy can only do so much. Hopefully, it’ll pull through it’s limitations.
My HiME. Am I missing a My HiME-gene or something? From what I heard, the show appeals to a varied range of audiences. But it’s supposed charm seems lost to this viewer.
SunaBouzu. To sum up the series: weird and silly storyline, hilarious OP, wacky lead, and an absurd amount of fanservice. It’s enough to sustain interest for the next episode.
