Fantastic Children: Episode 01

I can’t believe I’m saying this but thank goodness for a temporary internet interruption. Why? Because boredom led me to this intriguing new series that I’ve been ignoring for a while now.

The series opens to an agitated man mumbling incoherently about unspeakable evils and the teaser sets the tone for the episode. The first fifteen minutes left the audiences in a state of melancholy and wonder. But the introduction of a cheerful lad with boundless energy abruptly changes the solemn mood to a lighter fare.

The pilot hints a web of mysteries surrounding a group of children who appeared in various settings and time periods. These joyless brood’s journey seems to be connected to three females who lived exactly a century apart: Christine, Serafine, and Helga. Undoubtedly, hundreds of questions are raised regarding the purpose of these wandering and seemingly ageless children. With a handful of details, it is difficult to theorize an educated answer.

Fantastic Children is a delightful find amidst the new crop of shows this season. And how I love both the OP/ED themes. The images accompanying the music truly fits the atmosphere what the show attempts to create. The animation style and somber tone may discourage some viewers but I can’t reiterate enough that this is a title which deserves a second look.
