Fantastic Children: Episode 02

Similar to the format of the pilot, the first half focuses on the mysterious caped children while the latter half centers on Thoma.

Even this early, one notices the excellent narrative of the series. The scenes effortlessly weaves through different times and settings. Hints are divulged carefully and deliberately. So far, the writers avoid manipulative dialogue. One clear example is the small scene between Dr. Lugen (Paruza) and Mel. This sequence can easily provide melodrama, instead, it is crafted in a simplistic but touching way without resorting to a cheap cry.

Throughout the entire episode, there is a sense of quiet desperation. In order to be released from a seemingly cursed life, Mel’s will breaks down. Once again, Helga runs away from home to find solace elsewhere. And the five remaining children continue to carry on their endless search. A bird flying over the sky and a horse in the wild are few of the images which convey the feeling of a need for freedom and sanctuary.

I love this show. It’s simple yet so intricate with its storytelling. And the music is superb too. I want both the DVD and soundtrack once they come out. Is there any kind soul who knows where to find the full version of the ED?
