Genshiken: Episode 02

The first half of the episode offers a glimpse of the world of doujinshi. Amusing but its the second half which had me laughing so hard, I literally fell off my couch.

The discussion of hentai is such a messed up segment. Otakus trying to justify to a non-anime fan the basics behind such interest proves to be quite a hilarious explanation. Truthfully, Saki’s reaction to ero-games and h-anime pretty much sums up my initial reaction to this sub-genre. I still find it icky but it’s just a matter of, um, taste…

Upon learning of Saki’s past connection to Kohsaka, the Otaku-trio (I have to learn their names) reacts with such ferocity. Relating to anime is one thing, but to actually parallel a person’s life with a storyline can be scary. Heh, I want to meet a person like this. Or maybe not.

As it turns out, Kohsaka isn’t as clueless as he seems. He definitely likes Saki and kisses her in front of everyone. Good developments, right? Unfortunately for Saki, the otaku blood runs through Kohsaka’s veins. Her imagined rendezvouz has to wait, for her beloved Kohsaka has to satisfy his obsessive hobby.

If the first two installments are any indication of the laugh-out-loud moments, I’m sold. And I’m loving the pseudo-pretentious titles for the episodes. So far, Genshiken has exceeded my expectations. All I hope for is a consistent if not better quality for the succeeding chapters.
