Tactics: Episode 03

Quite frankly, the audiences have yet to be offered stellar episodes. But the infusion of the old world charm, the magicks, and the hint of contention, presented through crisp visuals and haunting melodies — except for that bothersome theme — entice this audience member.

The simplistic images and an eerie chant of the teaser set the tone for the night. While humor is interspersed throughout the episode, the repeated playing of the children’s chant reminds us of a lingering darkness hidden beneath the deceptive lightness. This not only applies to the monster-of-the-week but also with Haruka and his forgotten memories. Once he faces a demon, the audiences catches a glimpse of his gentle eyes being replaced with ones which seem to hunger for destruction.

As early as episode three, one senses a disparity between Haruka and Kantarou’s methods on subduing a demon. Haruka’s instinctive response towards his opponent is complete defeat regardless of consequences, while Kantarou prefers an ideal but naive way of concluding his fights. And if the white tengu’s belief is true, the longevity of their partnership may be tested in the near future.

For some reason, I’m slowly getting attached to this series. When one takes out the gorgeous animation, I think we’ll still be left with a potentially solid storyline. But then, I’m usually off my mark. Ah, I really hope the title will deliver the goods.
