Samurai 7: Episode 18

I thought we’d be given a break from the regular storyline. I’m clearly mistaken. Instead of adding filler-ish episode, the animators opt to continue with the ongoing thread. Without a doubt, the episode offers surprises for its viewers.

Kanbei takes the blame for the killing of the imperial messenger. The reason behind his reckless *confession* is to infiltrate the capital with the help of the Shikimoribito. His plan would’ve been a success if not for a not-so-unexpected development. Sanae, Rikichi’s wife, intervenes and pleads for Amanushi’s life. As a consequence, Kanbei is captured and is waiting for his execution.

Meanwhile in a surprising move, Maro orders the release of the samurai held captive by his father. He forms an alliance and asks them to protect the peasants from the Nobuseri. Since this young man has a twisted mind, it’s had not to be suspicious of his seemingly noble gesture. Is he for real? When will we learn of his hidden agenda?
