Gallery Fake: Episdoe 01

I admit it, I’m a dork. I’m always on the lookout for new titles to preview especially if it’s a lesser hyped series (in my part of town, at least). With Gallery Fake catching my attention, another series is added to my watch list which means more sleep-deprivation for yours truly.

To be honest, I am neither impressed nor overwhelmed by the pilot. In fact, one may categorize the first episode as tolerable and average. Yet the premise itself (based on little research) leaves me quite fascinated. Fujita, the protagonist, owns an unusual art gallery where every piece on display are reproductions of well-known works, thus the name of the place, Gallery Fake. He is rumored to make illegal trading through the underground network. He travels to NYC along with his female assistant to participate on a major auction. However, his purpose is not confined to business alone.

With the anime adapted from a long-running manga (30+ volumes and counting), I expect a solid foundation for the storyline. But I question some of the facts presented to its viewers. For someone imbued neither with knowledge nor great interest, I seem to find some of the discussions on the subject implausible if not ludicrous. Then again, the work is fiction and alterations on certain details should be acceptable. But do they really need to call Van Gogh as Gogh?

The art world surrounded with conspiracies, mystery, intrigue, and intricate plots pieced together over time can be a potentially captivating ride for this audience member. If not… Oh, well. I’ll just demand my precious hours back. =D

BTW, Gallery Fake has an interesting choice of OP/ED themes. Instead of the usual Jpop offering, it brings us jazzy sort-of ska-ish music. I love it.
