Speed Grapher 01

A gritty action thriller accompanied with a not-so-subtle social commentary and disturbing proclivity, Speed Grapher boasts of an audacious attempt to disprove cliche (even with the apparent doses of it). A well-executed follow-up for the visually arresting and the mentally stimulating pilot holds a pivotal role to capture a potential loyal following.
Since it is a Gonzo series, the animation is unsurprisingly above average. But impressive designs alone will be lost without the riveting cast. Saiga, a war-photographer veteran, infiltrates a cult-like organization for (wo)men of power and uber-wealth. A reckless action reveals his identity and earns him a surreal punishment. Ginza, an intriguing female detective with skillful marksmanship and masterful machinations instructs Saiga on his assignments. Shirogane, a creepy dancer, moonlights as an assassin (for hire?). Suitengu, the mysterious right-hand man of a powerful figure, heads a dubious company. And there’s a seemingly ethereal young lady called the Goddess who suspiciously defies gravity.
Time will tell if Speed Grapher is capable of holding one’s interest with serious solid storytelling aside from the shocking scenes. But with the seemingly tricky plot threads, a strong foundation is needed for a satisfying payoff later on the season. Truthfully, I’m still wary of Gonzo by its reputation. But with the recent excellent anime adaptation of Count of Monte Cristo, I’m slightly optimistic of its writing muscle.
