Bleach: Episode 32

Bleach shows the genre on how flashbacks should be done. Kudos to the script writer, the music selection, the episode director, and Kentarou Itou, Renji’s seiyuu. I’m impressed.
The episode is played out through Renji’s point of view. He describes his first meeting with Rukia, her integration to his group, their decision to live in Seireitei, and Rukia’s adoption to the Kuchiki clan. In each scenario, the viewers can see the subtle changes in Renji’s affection for his friend — from his school-boy-like crush to his weary and painful acceptance of Rukia’s newfound family. The scene highlights are accompanied by deceptively simple music (played with one or two instruments) to none at all, which contributes to the subdued atmosphere.
As I’ve mentioned, I am rather delighted at the treatment for this episode. This installment not only succeeds in fleshing out Renji’s character and exploring his depth. It also provides a significant piece of Rukia’s backstory. It touches on emotion but restrains itself from melodrama. I really like the fact that the director opted for subtlety. Bleach has moved up another notch for this viewer. I can only hope that the studio can keep up with this quality. Consistency is the key.
BTW, this audience member can now trace Renji’s ever-evolving eyebrows. We can now theorize that this particular set of eyebrows might have a life of its own. ^___^
