Trinity Blood: Episode 03

Due to previously known anime patterns, I half-expected a barrage of stand-alone episode from Trinity Blood. At least, until it reaches an episode or two behind the beginning of the second half of the season. Thankfully, we are onto the meaty part of the story with the introduction of two significant characters — Gyula, a powerful marquis, and Esther, a vengeful nun.
Gyula has great hatred for the Vatican. His motivations for conspiring with the Empire (*lol* I’m picturing Gyula in a Darth outfit) are quite ambiguous, though. Yet it is highly probable for the Church to be a significant contributor to his wife’s death which triggered his current master plan. Gyula’s non-expression can be rather bothersome but the fact that his vindictive plans are intertwined with a loss of a beloved, ironically, makes him a sympathetic character. I await his next course of action.
I’m not sure if it is mere coincidence or a stretch of facts to support this observation but it seems as if we can draw a couple of parallels from the character Esther and the Old Testament’s Esther. Gyula and his Nazi-like army are out to get the Church similar to Haman’s attempted genocide. And it seems that the star-marked Esther will be a key figure to rescue her people. From what exactly, I don’t know.
Trinity Blood isn’t exactly shaping out to be a great anime series. Maybe competent or plain decent at best, but not particularly special. However, I find an odd charm emanating from this title. There’s a certain oomph that allows this audience member from coming back for another installment. And this intriguing quality may hopefully morph into more substantial groundwork later on the season.
