Bleach OVA 01: Memories in the Rain

Memories in the Rain opens to Ichigo and Gran Fisher trading blows beneath the gray, wet sky. The scene includes a few select lines before transitioning into a beautifully crafted display of Ichigo’s last moments with his mother. The sequence delivers the poignancy lacking from the poorly executed version in the TV adaptation. The first two minutes set the atmosphere for the entire OVA.

As with any other episode from the TV series, the OVA is not without humor. Physical gags and light banter, although far and in-between, are infused in appropriate segments. However, the bulk of the half hour is allotted to serious tones. The technique used in the flashbacks is somewhat reminiscent to the current releases, including the color palette and the narration. The background music is more or less similar to the ones used in the TV version. Certain editions caused a bit obvious plot holes, especially Gran Fisher’s instant recognition to Ichigo. However, the OVA makes up for it by integrating spoilerific inclusions such a brief glimpse of Rukia’s past — which emphasizes the intensity of her indecision –, and by packing concentrated emotional punch.

I very much enjoyed this release. Regrettably, the re-animated version shown in the TV series pales in comparison to this impressive offering. This is how it should’ve been. If only the studio decided to incorporate the key elements of this OVA to the disappointing episode.
