Glass Mask: Episode 21

ZOMG!! ZOMG!! ZOMG!! It finally happens, and whew… It took an enormous amount of energy not jump up and down the couch. Maintaining composure is even out of the question. Seriously. I must calm myself. I am in need of tranquilizers since breathing-in-and-out is not working at all. Take one look at the chosen screencaps and you might realize the reasoning behind the sudden display of incoherence. Or at least more than usual. I mean, looking at Masumi’s pleading eyes is heart-wrenching.

Instead of commenting on the details for this episode, allow this blogger to go off tangent (like I always do). I’d like to talk about their (Maya and Masumi) relationship. I would be giving away MAJOR SPOILERS from the manga so please just scroll down to last paragraph if you’d like to avoid the info.

A poverty-stricken but courageous heroine secretly saved by a dashing-yet-sometimes-difficult man. Personalities clash. Tempers rise. Sparks fly. The chemistry is almost tangible. He is in-love with her. She is in-love with him. Yet, there is a twist. Great love affairs always do.

Maya learns the identity of the sender of the purple roses. She is confused by this realization but refuses to assume that this man deeply cares for her in a level she even she cannot comprehend. She avoids confronting him. Instead, she secretly falls for the man she once hated (did she really?). Both mutually love each other but unable to express themselves in fear of hurting the other party. Or perhaps, rejection itself.

Masumi and Maya are soul mates. I believe that. Someday, the characters will believe it themselves. However the real world can be a difficult place. Or in this case a fictional world. Finding your soul mate does not automatically place you by their side. It does not guarantee happiness. The series brilliantly illustrates not only the harshness of society’s limiting restrictions but also the illogical reasoning that usually encompasses oneself when experiencing the feeling called love.

Now, I am depressed… So much for my initial excitement while I started writing this entry. Thinking about the angst that is Maya and Masumi can be rather emotionally draining. *sigh* Anyhow for your viewing pleasure, I’ve scanned a few pages of the manga featuring where the episode highlight is taken from. Don’t you just love the seventies hair???
