Veronica Mars rox my sox

I’m officially sucked into the world called ‘Veronica Mars’. Yeah, I even pre-ordered the DVD boxset. I’ve got it bad. >_ <

Besides ‘Lost’, I haven’t really watched any primetime television. Friends have recommended ‘Desperate Housewive’ so I watched a couple of episodes but, sadly, I was left utterly unimpressed. I was told to watch ‘Battlestar Galactica’ and ‘The 4400′ but I haven’t had the time to preview them. Maybe later on. Anyhow, my hero Joss Whedon (Yes, I believe he is a god. ;p) posts an entry at Whedonesque stating Veronica Mars is the ‘Best. Show. Ever.’

Hmmm. If this genius of a writer/director boldly proclaims such statement, I’m interested. But of course, I am a bit uncertain on what to expect. I like my shows witty and smart (at least, most of them). And the show at first glance seems to reek of ‘The OC’ and ‘Beverly hills 90210′ with a mix of Nancy Drew thrown in. So needless to say, I was cautious. But lo, and behold. The first two episodes had me hooked and left me teetering between pre-ordering the DVDs or just download the rest of the episodes. With the sheer force of my lack of will, I succumb to the dark side… I did both. So here I am singing praises to this intelligent series.

Of course, the best part of the show comes from its script. Rob Thomas is our man, the creator of Veronica Mars. Rising from the failed ‘Cupid’, he pens tight dialogue and sharp wit surrounded by a web of mysteries. Then, there’s ANGST. And meh, I love THE angst. To top it off, he was able to hire great actors perfect for their part. Gotta love his casting director.

The main characters are beautifully portrayed by very convincing actors, especially the title role Veronica Mars (Kristin Bell) and the semi-villain Logan (Jason Dohring). Kristin Bell is well, for the lack of a better word, awesome. She balances out the street smart, the cute, the funny, and the angst. Damn, this girl does it all. (Just compare and contrast the portrayal of the pre-Lily murder and the present.) Aside from the obvious, Jason Dohring emerges as one of the best actors in the series. He can show brutality one moment then one would find sympathy for him the next. I sure am going to keep an eye on this promising newcomer.

Okay, I know it’s weird for me to commenting on non-anime related things but I just want to show some pimpage for ‘Veronica Mars’. So if you’re on this side of the planet, I do encourage you to tune in on September 21 at UPN. Yeah, it runs side-by-side with ‘Lost’ but just TiVo ‘Lost’ and stay with ‘Veronica Mars’. Hehe, we need the ratings to keep the show on air.
