Hana Yori Dango J-drama: Episode 01

Quick random question. Does the F4 realize that being named the ‘Flower four’ isn’t exactly manly? Seriously. Oh, well. Since Eitoku Gakuen students are heavily populated with sheep who am I to argue the obvious.

The first ten minutes of Hana yori Dango brought me distress. I wanted to weep in despair. Eitoku Gakuen students are not only a flock of sheep but they godawful gaudy as well. Apparently money cannot buy good taste and class. I had no complaints with the Tsukushi character but the introduction of F4 provided pure moments of terror. Akira looked as if he’ll be in constant constipation. Sojiro is too girly-looking. Rui, oh my gawd, Rui’s close-ups are flawed with blemishes. And those unspeakable clothes. (In my defense, I always picture Rui blemish-free.) And Mr. Pouty-lips seems to suffer really bad hair day.

But the dissatisfaction lasted for only a few minutes. After ignoring the fashion faux pas (yes, Rui, I’m looking at you), the rest is surprisingly good television. The best thing which stands out the most is the contrast between the Makino and Domyouji household. Instead of the superficial gloss, it provided a glimpse true affection in Tsukushi’s cozy abode even in a little scene of packing bento box. And there’s the cold environment of Tsukasa and his quiet rebellion against his mother as shown in the dinner scene. Little but rather significant moments.

A mark of a good episode always leaves the viewer wanting for more. The HanaDan drama adaptation gives this and more. I can truly and honestly say, that I am very anxious for the second round.
