Anime Wish List ‘06
Around this time last year, I picked a few titles to be included in an anime wish list of manga-to-anime conversion. And this time, here is another set of titles I would like to see.
Manga-to-anime.
1. Bara no Tame ni (Akemi Yoshimura). An ugly duckling amidst beautiful swans. Sounds cliché? Maybe. But this time around, the heroine is unlike no other girl in most romantic comedies. Seriously. While I have enjoyed the TW drama adaptation, I think it is high time for an anime to be in the works. Sadly, it seems next to impossible. =(
2. Shinshi Doumei Cross (Arina Tanemura). The anime world needs another Tanemura-lurving. Period.
3. Tokyo Crazy Paradise (Yoshiki Nakamura). Yes, I am obsessed with Nakamura-sensei. And I would give my first-born to any studio smart enough to get hold of this series.
4. Akane-chan Overdrive (Mikan Momokuri). I know, this type of genre isn’t typical of me to wade through. But I can’t help but really enjoy this piece. It is silly and hilarious. Plus, there’s the gender-bending bit going on in the characters.
5. Kagen no Tsuki (Ai Yazawa). If I were to pick an Ai Yazawa favorite, I pick Kagen no Tsuki. This is one of her best works. I dare say it is better than Nana and Paradise Kiss. Then again, I have no great love for either of them. Let me put it this way, it is the only manga of hers that I can reread repeatedly.
Anime sequel. More often than not, sequels are disappointing. However, this does not dissuade me from wanting another season of my anime favorites.
1. Fruits Basket (Natsuki Takaya). I’ve complained of the waning quality of the story. Nevertheless, I demand a second season after Takaya-sensei completes the manga.
2. Princess Tutu. Do you really want Ahiru to stay as a duck forever? No, I guess not.
3. Gokusen (Kozueko Morimoto). The live action version had a sequel. So is it too much to ask for the anime to have the same treatment?
4. Black Cat (Kentaro Yabuki). I’m still in my Black Cat obsession mode. If this wish remains unchanged in the next few months, then I’ll know that it’s true love. ;p
5. Twin Spica (Kou Yaginuma). We need to know what happens to Asumi and company. I know I can always read the manga, but I want the anime to tell me the story.
TV shows. Ridiculous, I know. Still, I like to humor myself.
1. Firefly. Yes, I am a Whedon whore. But I honestly think Firefly in anime form will be a very exciting ride. There’s angst, comedy, and action, in addition to an excellent premise. Why not give it a try?
2. Smallville. I have a love-hate relationship with Smallville. On one hand, there’s the atrocious writing (although this season is decent). And the other hand, there’s Lex Luthor. I understand that we have the Superman cartoons, blah, blah, blah. But wouldn’t it be a trip to see it in this style instead? Think of the Lex and Clark, in bishified form, displaying some shounen-ai implications. Luscious, isn’t it?
3. Dark Angel. The like the premise. I like the heroine. And I even like the romantic lead.
4. Miami Vice. Hee, don’t laugh. Take out the uber-eighties fashion, and what’s left? Erm, nothing much I suppose. But think about it. A stylish police duo amidst luxurious splendor. Not bad, right? *snorts*
5. Wonderfalls. Only a few will probably recognize this series for FOX has given it the inevitable cancellation. Still, I think that its story will be a great backbone for an anime show.
