Saiunkoku Monogatari: Episode 01

When I fall hard for a series, I fall hard and quick. And thus, my initial meeting with Saiunkoku Monogatari.

Aside from the array of eye-candy (read: gloriously lovely male species), Saiunkoku Monogatari offers Shuurei, a strong heroine capable of quick wits and cunning. To be a select choice as the emperor’s wife is somewhat believable, for she seems to be chosen not only for her rank or birth but also for her mind. A cheerful, no-nonsense girl, Shuurei exhibits no indication of potential irritation. No insipid simpering, no excessive complaining, no signs of a leech syndrome. Is this for real?

A comedic and inventive spin on a tried-and-true plotline, Saiunkoku Monogatari manages to exude freshness and hilarity.

Oh, lordy. I vowed not be suckered in by another series this season. It’s more of mild advice, really. Did I listen to this cautionary reminder? Heavens, no. I had to wade through the files of my ‘maybe folder’ (Yes, I do have one.) and not-so-randomly select an episode. And here I am, in a frantic search of subbed and raw releases. I never learn.
