Reliving Semi-forgotten Cheese

“Let’s Volt in!”
Oh, nostalgia.
I completely blame Hinano for this “blast to the past”. ;p After reading her post, I have been scouring videos on old childhood favorites. And where else can you conveniently access old clips from beyond?
When I think of childhood favorites — the Japanese titles, anyway –, four titles comes to mind: Two anime shows and two sentai series.
I absolutely loved Voltes V as a kid and I had a crush on the Rodeo-dude. Of course, I have only seen dubs back then. It is a great pleasure to hear the original voice actors but I have a very mushy spot for those dubs too. You know, for sentimental reasons. Oh, listening to the ED theme gives me goosebumps.
Along with this series, I remember watching a dubbed Daimos, all in its Romeo&Juliet tinged mecha glory. It was too angsty for a very young kid yet two distinct lines were permanently embedded in my brain.
Erica: RICHAAAARRRRDDDDD!!!
Richard: ERICAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!
(Note: I do not know their original names.)
I found it annoying. Now, it strikes me hilarious. I would watch it again. Although, for the record, I think Voltes V is much better.
As for sentai, I used to swear by Bioman and Shaider. If you ask me for the plot, I honestly cannot remember, except for the death of Bioman’s Yellow 4. That ticked me off, since she was my favorite. And I always insisted on playing her whenever I role-played with my little sister and cousins. I have never warmed up to that bow-wielding replacement.
I admit they reek of cheese. But… but… you know, they are awesome.
Isn’t it great to see the world in rose-colored glasses?
