Yamato Nadeshiko Shichihenge: Episode 2

Perhaps the act of watching Yamato Nadeshiko Shichihenge aka PGE (that’s Perfect Girl Evolution, for you non-manga readers) is akin to an art of masochism. Deriving pleasure from the agonizing production values and the inherent WTF-ness must be an immoral transgression against my anime bylaws. Considering the revulsion this blogger articulated for its anime debut, I was supposed to move on. Never to look back. However, my enduring lurv for Tomoko Hayakawa superseded attempts to be oblivious of the adaptation. With great reluctance, I picked up my tattered pom-poms and hollered my best cheer. Then, I held my breath. PGE throws a curveball. Color me surprised.

After frightening her not-so-manly housemates, Sunako trudges down the halls of her new school. She casts great shadow amongst her peers yet her strange freakish nature earns the curiosity of addled pubescent minds. She becomes a target of amateur tabloid photographers. Sunako’s fantasy of a solitary high school life is ruined. And so goes a day of her life.

The laughs, scarce in the first episode, automagically appear in its follow-up chapter. Sunako’s voice actor’s high shrill still manages to grate my ears and the horrible animation still rears its ugly head; but the funny — may it be a pun, a physical gag, or a not-so-gentle mocking — waltzes in, as if it owns the building. Hope is in our grasps.

Make me laugh, darnit, and I’ll eat humble pie.

P.S. I want a scythe-wielding Sunako action figure.
