Bokuimo Live Action

Boku wa Imouto wo Suru deals with a forbidden love affair. It is Romeo and Juliet, only if they were kin. The manga, as well as the anime, offers a bittersweet, albeit romanticized, star-crossed lovers in a controversial pairing.
Incest is a difficult subject to touch. And Bokuimo attempts to present a reality that is — and will always be — associated with social stigma. This January, Toshiba Entertainment releases its live action adaptation. The movie casts Arashi’s Jun Matsumoto and Nana Eikura as the doomed Yuuki twins.
Although the popularity of the manga and its anime counterpart suggests a certain acceptance to these fictional characters, the transition to a live action film may result to varying comfort levels. Characters played by real actors will humanize the cast, in the sense where you can almost imagine these people as someone next door. However, the fate of Bokuimo will be ultimately decided by deft storytelling from its director, Ando Hiroshi.
Despite my misgivings on the manga and the anime (Let’s just say there was a whole lot of eye-rolling and smirking from this blogger.), I am surprised by my anticipation for the film. While MatsuJun’s appearance generates 39.2% of the excitement, I am truly looking forward on the treatment given particularly to Bokuimo. Will Bokuimo shy away from passionate ardor? Will it offer a sterile interpretation of love? Will it suffer from excessive emotional manipulations? Or will it present the dark and grittier side of its subject?
I welcome Bokuimo with mixed feelings. Yet still, I will watch this movie with an open mind. All I have to do is sit tight and wait for the DVD (or perhaps a not-so-legal bootleg).
Hmmm. I must keep my eye on the Tokyo Toshokan.
